QHow easy is it to set up this cart? Can I use FrontPage?

AThere are no programming skills needed to install ViaJCart but you need to have basic knowledge of HTML and how Internet works to set up this software. You also need to know common file extensions and how to upload them with FTP program.

The ViaJCart is a stand alone program. It is similar to a template concept where you just add your product information, shipping and etc. You must maintain the same directory structure as in the original zip file.

You can use FrontPage, for example, to edit HTML files. For .ini and script files use a standard Notepad program that comes with Windows.

The best thing is to download fully functional trial version and test it before you buy. You can easily upgrade it to licensed version after everything is set up. No data will be lost. You will only need to overlay some class files.

We are currently working on the Wizard/Builder that will make it easier to set up this shopping cart but it is unfortunately several month away.

We normally do not provide technical email support for free or trial versions but can answer few specific questions.

QI downloaded trial version of ViaJCart and when I click on the button music page opens on top of the applet. How can remove it?

ATo take advantage of background music feature in ViaJCart you must use HTML frames. One frame will contain the Shopping cart Applet itself and the second invisible frame (JSCAudio.htm) will be used to play audio files randomly. Take a look at the HTML code on JSC.htm and jscfrm.htm sample pages to see how it's done.

To disable this function specify Music=No in JSC.ini file.

QWhat are the requirements on running ViaJCart?

APlease read http://www.vssd.com/viajcart_requirements.htm

QCan we run the cart under an NT box...?

AJust want to clarify one thing. The Java cart does not run on server. It runs on client's computer. Most of our clients run it under Windows 95/98/NT.
All that is executed on the server is CGI/Perl script which most NT servers can run very well. All that is required is ability to run your own custom script and for a provider to have "sendmail" or any other mail program to send orders and receipts via email. The "sendmail" program is a standard Unix program and it is free. For NT it is about $500 therefore most NT providers offer "Blat" program which is free. Check with your provider on the availability of this program. The "Blat" and "sendmail" programs MUST be properly installed and configure by the provider. You can not simply put it into your "cgi-bin" directory. In addition we provide two other methods SMTP and FTP.

QCan I run this cart on Secure Server (SSL)?

AThis applet cannot work with SSL server. You can place the applet itself on the secure server and it will have an appearance of being secure but in reality the Java cannot connect to SSL server. The SSL covers half way only anyway. It only protects Client to Server connection. But when you send email order it travels over open lines without any SSL protection. Again the only option that you have is to have an appearance of SSL by placing the cart on SSL server but connect without SSL to the same sever within the cart itself.

For more info please read http://www.vssd.com/java_security.htm

QHow many items can ViaJCart handle?

AThere is actually no limit to how many products this cart can handle. We have clients with catalog around 10000 items without any problems. Actually this cart can handle a lot more. The key is to organize data into small catalogs that will be loaded as needed. The CGI search can search 10000 items database in few seconds.

QI want the orders to be emailed to me. Can this cart do this?

AAny shopping cart processes orders via Perl CGI script or SMTP methods. We even provide a last resort FTP method. CGI is the best method to use but your provider needs to have some mail program on the server via which the orders will be send. Most Unix servers have "sendmail" program which is a free for Unix and about $500 for NT. The NT servers have similar "blat" mail program.

This cart can process orders in 3 different ways: FTP(by storing all info on your server), SMTP(if it is available on your server, email is sent) or CGI(the JSCCGI110.cgi script calls for "sendmail" program and sends order to the merchant and receipt to the customer or JSCCGIblat.pl calls "blat" program). You need to select one and disable the other methods. The best method to use is CGI. It is the fastest and most reliable.

QI just uploaded the trial cart to my site and some of the images do not show up, why?

AIf you are hosting this cart on Unix system make sure that upper/lower case in the original file matches the names of the images in "Sys" directory. Unix server is case sensitive.

QCan I take other payments than credit card like Checks?

AYou can add additional payment methods besides credit cards by changing JSCChkOut.ini file in the Frm directory.

Also you add additional fields to the checkout form (JSCChkOut.ini) or rename current ones in JSCStrings.ini. Rename "Credit Card Number" field to "Credit Card/Bank Acct#" and "Credit Card Type" to "Payment Method".

QI have placed a test order and opened it in Decrypt program. When I click on decrypt orders nothing happens?

AEncrypt "PSW" (password) parameter in JSC.ini using Licensed Decrypt program for Licensed ViaJCart and Demo Decrypt for demo version in order to decrypt orders.

To encrypt “PSW” (password) parameter open Decrypt program by clicking on jscd2.exe file. Select “Tools” -> “New Password”. Enter password. Locate JSC.ini file and it will automatically encrypt this password.

Then upload updated JSC.ini file in ASCII(text) mode to the server. Close and restart your browser to clear up cache and not to pull old JSC.ini file. Place new orders and try to decrypt them using the password you have encrypted. Save them as regular text file (.txt) to your desired directory.

Tip: Give meaningful names to these order files like date it were placed, for example “ord05269901.txt”. This way you can always find the particular order. Then just open this file with the Decrypt program and enter your password. Save decrypted file as “ord05269901d.txt” the “d” is for decrypt. So if you need to look at the order you don’t have to decrypt it again.

Open order file in the Decrypt program. Select “Tools” -> “Decrypt Order”. Enter password encrypted previously.

QI'm currently looking for a web provider would you recommend hosting this cart on Unix or NT server?

AThis cart can run on any web hosting servers. However you need to have certain options available on this server. You should be able to run Perl scripts and have availability of the "sendmail" or similar mail program. We suggest using Unix based server since it offers more flexibility.

QCan we buy one copy and use it on multiple sites?

AYou are required to buy a copy for each storefront/ client/ domain. You cannot get one copy and use it on multiple domains.

QI'm practicing with the trial version I downloaded. When I go to purchase a licensed copy of ViaJCart, will I have to re-enter my information from the trial version to the Licensed version?

AWhen you place an order all you will need to do is overlay existing .class, .jar and .cab with licensed files. You will also need to encrypt "PSW" password parameter in JSC.ini file with Licensed Decrypt program. Upload updated JSC.ini file in ASCII mode to the server. That is all. The data that you input will stay the same.

QWhy wont the MIDI files play under Netscape on my server?

AThe Midi files are not being played via Netscape browser because your provider needs to change certain files for them to recognize .mid extension. Most servers are set by default to recognize common extension files. Usually this info is stored in .htacess file.

The Netscape comes with build in music player that can play midi files or you can install a midi plug-in replacing the player. If you install the midi plug-in it will work fine. The Netscape player doesn't work with your Web provider setup. Each web server has MIME type settings. Your provider's settings are not compatible with Netscape. Please contact them and ask to set MIME types to recognize .mid/.midi extensions.

QI am very impressed with your shopping cart. I have installed it on my intranet Web server and tested it. It works fine. I wonder if it could be connected to a live database.

AThis product does not support live database. This cart was designed as simple and affordable solution for e-commerce since most providers charge extra for database support.

You can use Microsoft Access to input your catalog data and export it when ready. Create one table for each catalog. Input your data. When ready export this table into ASCII file using ‘|’ as a field delimiter.

QI have a hosting company and am looking for a good, easy to use shopping cart to offer my customers. Do you have a reseller (VAR) plan for that?

AThank you for your interest in our product. We do not offer any VAR (Value Added Resale) programs at this time. We sell direct only.

You will need to buy the Licensed copy for each of your clients.

QCan I use your shopping cart software with the real-time credit card processor of my choice?

AThe ViaJCart was designed to be interfaced with any real-time credit card processing service. We have scripts that work with SecurePay and AuthorizeNet. For other service providers you will need to change CGI scripts accordingly.

This cart was designed to be used with any real-time credit card service that uses HTML form to processed the credit card. We provide scripts for Authorize.net and Securepay. If you plan to use other companies you will need to edit couple of scripts.

You should realize before you set up for any automated processing that raw orders direct from the Internet may contain errors or be jokes or even fraud. We recommend our standard non-real-time set-up, where you can review each order, then process it on your own equipment just as if it were a phone order. When you receive an order through cart, you can (and should) review it for legitimacy, check to make sure all needed information has been included by the customer, enter it into your records, and only then key charges into your merchant POS terminal (or equiv.). Charge difficulties are avoided, and you maintain total control over your merchant account. The customer doesn't know the difference, and it's a lot safer for you.

We also believe that this is a disservice to the customer unless you ship the item right away. If you pay attention to large companies on the Internet, such as Amazon and CDnow just to name the few, DO NOT use real-time to process credit cards. They charge the credit card only at the point the item is being shipped. Your customers will be very unhappy if they see that their credit card was charged but they do not have the product on hand.

Usually you have to pay extra for this service and obviously the companies that sell these services do not advertise this. The real-time processing only needed for large volume sites, downloadable software and adult sites. Most companies do not need this service.

I would suggest investing time downloading fully functional ViaJCart trial version and testing it prior to purchasing since we do not have money back policy. The real-time processing installation is time consuming. We charge $60-$120 (depending on the time spent) for this service in addition to the price of the cart. We simply unable to provide free support. We can answer few simple inquiries before you buy it.

QCan I remove "About" button?

AThe "About" button displays VSSD's copyright information, name of the program and the version number. It can not be removed.

QDo you sell source code?

ANo.

QCan I remove "Warning Applet Window" message?

AAs part of the Java security system, your browser will display 'warnings' on all windows and frames which originate with this applet. This is normal for all Java applets and is simply so that you can tell which frames and windows originate from the Java applets loaded from a server, and which are normal HTML pages. Java security is extremely sophisticated, and as with all Java applets this program is unable to read or write from your hard disk or memory. It cannot modify your settings or applications in any way.

Designers of Java wanted to make sure that you know that is not a local application but the one running from the web. It can not be changed. Its build into a browser. You might want to send this suggestion to Microsoft or Netscape.

QI am looking at the free version of your online shopping program and have a little problem. The decrypt will not start.

A- From the User Manual - After successful installation find JSCD.exe file in the JSCD main directory. This is your executable file that you run to start the JSCD program. The JSCD.exe is not an executable file but a Windows 95 Shortcut file. Click on it with right mouse button and select properties option. Select Shortcut tab. The Target input field will contain something like this: C:\Windows\jrew.exe -cp C:\Dev\devjava\JSCD JSCD. You will have to update the directory name after -cp parameter with your JSCD directory path.

For example if you put VSSD JSCD files into C:\javashop\jscd directory your shortcut path will look like this:

C:\Windows\jrew.exe -cp C:\javashop\jscd JSCD

When the shortcut is set up properly you click on JSCD.exe file then locate your encrypted order file normally with .txt extension. Click to decrypt the order and enter password that you encrypted previously in JSC.ini file using JSCD utility.

We apologize but we are unable to provide support for the free version. Please read our comprehensive User Manual.

For more information please read Troubleshooting chapter in our User Manual.
